October 2002 - George Butler
6 October 2002 - George Butler Arts Coritani was founded to exhibit contemporary artworks and yet the second exhibition here features an artist from a bygone era. The reasons are twofold. Seasoned art critics will know that it is possible to view an abstract artwork and discern whether or not the artist has any of the compositional, colour or drawing skills which were once the cornerstones of academic training. For many, these are still the yardsticks by which to gauge an artists talent and we find ourselves among these, for we do not intend to subscribe to the 'anything goes' mindset of some modern schools. Good art is useful, perhaps even utilitarian, and we would like to enjoy it as we would the comfort of a well-designed chair or the use of an efficient piece of machinery. Although some may differ, we do not enjoy imbalance or the frustrations of a machine which does not work. This second exhibition then serves to illustrate our resolve and we are pleased to show it early in the lifetime of this gallery. Secondly, the artist on view, George Butler, created many of his paintings and drawings in the vicinity of Arts Coritani and thus his work is of importance to an area, the character of which few bygone painters have paused to record. True, Turner was active in the county, but the artworks in this show, although by a lesser artist, capture the past for us through the eyes of a local man.
